In Living Color

Do you ever take a moment and pause what youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขre doing, look around, and thank your Father for the day? So many times I find myself living with my head down, busy with making a meal or looking for a child. Of course, I’m always asking, รขโ‚ฌล“Has anyone seen Bauer? Where is the dog?รขโ‚ฌย รขโ‚ฌโ€œ snort.

I can be so engrossed in the minutia of the day that I donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt slow down to notice the beautiful colors surrounding me.ร‚ย

But, we are in living color.

And really, I donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt think Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขm alone in this thinking. I think many women can relate to me. When I pause and look around, I find myself enjoying the busyness of womanhood and motherhood in a totally new way.

There is a lot of color that surrounds us each day. Have you noticed color in the household chores and the meals prepped/served? How about the color in your decor and the shades of color of the flowers outside? I like to notice the variegated colors of the leaves, the crayon marks that accent my wall (cringe), and the small rock pile thatรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs been at my front door for seven weeks now.

We are in living color.

I began this blog post when we still lived near Detroit, and if you happened to see my last post (or, if you happen to follow me on Instagram), then you saw we moved north a few hours. Our new home is in Petoskey, tucked between Traverse City, Charlevoix, and Harbor Springs, just 40 minutes south of the Mackinac Bridge. Our home life in Petoskey is quite different from our home life near Detroit, there is still so much beautiful color to notice and rejoice over.

If I keep my eyes open, nothing is bland about this life. Would you agree with me about your life?

Over the last 14 years of marriage, which includes eight moves to eight different homes (comprised of three states and seven cities), I’ve learned that there is always something beautiful to see and take notice of.

We are in living color.

When I pause to notice this, I feel grounded in the moment and more present with those around me. I want to think about the colors around me right now because they are tiny previews of whatรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs to come when seated with Christ in the heavenly realms.

I pray you are mindfully present today, taking note of the colors surrounding you.

  1. I love this! I’ve been working hard to notice the SOUNDS of domesticity lately. The sound of turning the tap on at the sink; the gentle thud of placing a lid on the pot; the shuffling of my slippers as I clean the floors; the quiet slicing of vegetables and the knock of the knife hitting the cutting board. Focusing on our senses is a wonderful way to ground us as we navigate our day-to-day lives and has been helping me a lot.
