There’s nothing like a good rug to give me another excuse to add color to our home. For years and years, our homes have had hardwood flooring, which I love because of how easy they are to keep clean. But I also love hardwood floors because it gives me a chance to throw down some color, which is always my favorite. And the bolder the rug, the better! ;)
Here are three ways we decorate with rugs:
When we lived in Minneapolis, we used rugs in traditional ways: under tables and couches.
In Los Angeles, we began to use rugs in new ways: to create another room.
And now that we’re in Detroit, we added a third “way”: as bedroom dividers. Forget a long strip of masking tape — use a rug! ;) Besides, we’re on the floor a lot, and it’s nice to give our bottoms a soft place to land.

Since moving back to Detroit from Los Angeles a year ago, we’ve set up Maxwell and Natalie with a shared bedroom. It’s taken them a solid year to get used to their bedroom as a place to play, not just a room to sleep in. To help with the transition, we’ve added soft toys and creative play (a toy kitchen, puzzles, and a small collection of books), but it’s been a slow process.
And of course, we added this Moroccan Diamond rug (currently 70% off; RUGS USA has amazing sales all the time).
Do you have a basement / separate play area for your kids toys? Most of our toys are in the basement, and I rotate them often. For our family, it helps to keep the main floor of our house less cluttered with toys.
And let’s not forget to discuss what style of rug you prefer: bold or muted? This Geometric Tribal print is on my rug wishlist. (Clearly I love a bold rug!)
Many thanks to RUGS USA for sending Maxwell and Natalie a rug and pad for their bedroom. And as always, thank you for supporting the shops that help support me and my family! This community means so much.
I love Rugs, USA, and recently ordered a bold runner to put in my kitchen. I loved their prices! And, your rug is great!!
So glad to hear!!! :)
Maggie random question!! Did you say you have been substituting some of the ingredients in the zuppa toscana soup you’ve shown on your blog a few times? Or was I just dreaming that lol! I want to make and thought you mentioned you tweaked it a bit?? THANKS!!
Yes!!! I did write that ;)
I substitute the roasted red peppers for julienned carrots and the gnocchi for tortellini ;)
Thanks you rock!! Do you serve with any sides or anything?? Want to maximize the yum factor lol!
I often make dinner rolls and a side salad or fruit bowl.
