Where we love is home — home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts. — Oliver Wendell Holmes
Would you believe we’ve lived in our Los Angeles home now for almost 6 months? When we moved in we had just a few cardboard boxes filling up floor space and a crazy small assortment of kitchen ware — errr, a crazy small assortment of everything. We basically brought one bath towel with us, our pup, and peace of mind knowing Zack had a job. Since we’ve been married Zack + I have lived in many homes: we had an apartment in Lansing, MI; a house in Detroit; an apartment in Minneapolis; a house in Minneapolis; and now an apartment in Los Angeles. We spent many nights wishing + praying for a house to rent here, but that just didn’t make sense — for many reasons.
Our apartment is our home and it’s very clear to me now that the boxes have been recycled and love has been poured into every room. Our home may be small but it’s layered with our love and laughter and California sunshine. The things we brought with us, the things that have been gifted to us, all play into our grand, greater story. I love looking around and seeing how each item relates to it’s neighbor — and most especially, our hearts.
I love the quote above from Oliver Wendell Holmes. Really, Zack + I are rich with multiple homes, and I bet you are, too. We have our parents homes, which we love visiting, and we have our home. And the homes he + I have had together — they represent the country-wide adventure traveling we’ve done over the past {almost} 5 years. We’ve been chasing our dreams together and it feels good.
A few things I’ve learned // A colorful home, a family-filled home, a sometimes messy home. A cozy home is a well-loved home.
+ + +
This is our home — where our hearts are hung, we greet each morning with a fresh perspective, and we wait for the LORD to show us what’s next.
I’m so glad you came in for a little visit. Tell me, what have you learned about your home? xo
LOVE seeing glimpses of your sweet home, Maggie. Praying for you and for that sweet baby to arrive TODAY! (And I spied the Gussy gift I sent you!! Glad it made the cut from MN to Cali.)
@Jessica @The Mom Creative, Is Gussy in labor now???
@Carol, no ;D
@Jessica @The Mom Creative, I’m so thankful we had a little room to bring some of our most special items with us :) Love you friend! xoxo
Been awhile since I’ve commented girl, but I couldn’t help myself today.
I needed this peek into your beautiful layered home.
I find myself too often waiting to make this space our home. Sometimes renting a small apartment (especially with two little ones in tow now), I feel as though I’m in a temporary space and don’t have the right to make it my own. I hold back on hanging pictures or making sure I’ve decorated with pieces special to us. And because much of our furniture is second-hand (nothing wrong with it at all), I sometimes shy away from playing hostess to our friends because I’m afraid of judgement. Oh, I need to lean in. Embrace the chaos and beauty that Jesus has given me. Set down some roots and live in this space He has graciously given.
Thank you for the reminder. Amazing how simply sharing some pictures and thoughts can spark a serious change in the heart of another mama and change her family’s home! Praying for you in these next few days, weeks, months. Hugs from Ohio.
@Alle, Oh friend, I know. About 95% of our furniture is second-hand… bought at thrift stores or flea markets or Craigslist. The key is selecting items that reflect who you are, the home you and your husband want to have together. Who cares where it came from. Do you read The Nester’s blog? I love how she talks about teaching us how to live in our homes… one of the many things I’ve learned from reading her blog. ♥.
Oh sweet Gussy…. Hoping baby comes soon!!!!
I like it. It looks filled with love.
such a wonderful and cozy space you have Gussy! just needs one thing, a cute little baby!
@Lacey, yes yes — c’mon Baby!!!!!!!! :)
I LOVE seeing where you live. So sweet. And you know? I have a small home too and for that reason, I’m slow to take pictures and show that to people because I wrongly feel like no one cares unless it’s magazine ready… so this really inspires me to appreciate the things in it that make a life and speak about who we are….it doesn’t have to be perfect. Thanks. :)
@Dana (Happy Little Lovelies), Oh I am SO glad you shared this with me. I have been wanting to write this post for weeks but always found an excuse. I hate excuses! I’m so glad I had the courage to hit “publish” :) So glad you commented, Dana :)
Love how you decorate!!! I’m horrible at decorating, but with our limited budget there is little money for buying cute things I always see, darn debt snowball!!!! One of these days when we can actually live in a house longer then a year or two I am decorating like crazy!!!
Gussy,
Beautiful home and story filled with love and purpose. Congrats; you’ve inspired me to follow my dreams and take some risks. Started a blog and etsy shop; oh my!
Blessings,
Hey Gussy! I have a question, I have the same red stripe rug as you do in your living room, yours is so perfectly flat… mine still has the rolled edges (from being rolled up in the store) and it wont ever lay flat!! What did you do??! Share your secret hahaha
@Kimberly, One end gets tucked under the feet of our couch, the other end — one corner lays flat naturally and the other curls a little bit. We’ve tried placing heavy objects on it but it doesn’t seem to stay flat. I’m about to rotate it so the curled end goes under the couch feet. Have you ever bent the edges? Zack said they’re super pliable.
Yea, Yea, Yea! for tiny homes! Thank you for sharing your story of home – although my husband and I have only lived in one {tiny but very charming} apartment together we are looking to buy a house this spring & I’ve found myself having many waves of nostalgia over our little apartment. Hearing your story reminds me that I really am super hopeful for what a new home can bring! xx
I’ve learned that our home will never be magazine-esque – and I’d rather it not be. I will pick up for guests but I’m not deep cleaning. I wouldn’t want someone to deep clean for me just to hang out; I want to see real lives so when people come here, they’ll see our real lives (although I may hide my over flowing laundry basket!).
@Randi, Yes — so very good to practice. We should live in our homes, let them serve US, instead of having us serve them.
I just gave birth to my first born, Wyatt, on February 19 and I was 40w5d. It’s been fun to follow your blog as we were both going through similar things in life. I know what you’re going through and I hope your dear little one decides it’s time to come into the world very soon. Many blessings to you and yours!
oh goodness! I adore everything about your LA home…it’s so homey and beautiful. Great job Gussy :)
Would you mind sharing which size print you have of “You have my whole heart…” I went on her Etsy store b/c I would love to have that print above my couch but I’m not sure which size to get!
@nicole, This is the 18″ size. We love love love her work :)
@Gussy Sews, thank you thank you! will be purchasing :) I love it so much…happy almost baby time!!
It’s lovely, Maggie!
Looks beautiful!!! The coffee table is just a little different than ours but it is pretty darn identical! It looks super cute with the red rug and the book pages on the wall…probably my favorite spot in your adorable home! Loved taking the tour and imagining a little one crawling around one of these days very soon! xo
How cute! I have the same Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Sewing (what a small world, I have never seen another) that has been handed down since my grandmother. I can’t wait to give it to my daughter :) Even though she is 16 months old & has always expressed a definitive interest in music and dancing :)
Wishing you a safe delivery…..SOON!
@Ali B., I received that book as a gift from a blog reader! We’re R.D. twins! :)
I love your sweet home. And those name plates on that cradle? What a great idea! We have a cradle that was made for our oldest, but other babies are using it. A great way to keep track of all those babies.
I just love, love your living room walls and couch – everything about it!
@Ashley O., OH MY, thank you!!!!! :)
oh you look so cute! any time now, huh?
@melodee, Yes. We’re not staring at the clock or anything though ;D
[…] want to be a Gussy! Why can’t I get my home together like […]
I love your LA place, how sweet! Cute wall with pages and love the cradle. We’ve lived in 13(?) ugh different houses each one develops it’s own personality which is fun. After so many places you figure out the only thing that really matters is the people inside. Enjoy the simplicity of a smaller place ’cause that amazing little baby is going to hold all of your attention very soon!
adorable!
Sarah=)
