Oh for goodness sakes, the mister sure is handsome, isn’t he?
Our biggest, craziest, cross-country move // adventure to Santa Monica, California begins in just 6 days {gulp}. We decided to pull out from our our Minneapolis driveway and head west a day early because really, what is one extra day? Except for the fact we’ll be able to get into our home a day earlier. Hopefully…
I know this all seems very brave of us, but I’m nervous about our move. How soon until we find a church? How soon until we find friends? And what about a groove for our family? One second I have butterflies — I’m really excited to decorate our new home, and of course the beautiful weather waiting for us, the next second I get a giant lump in my throat. This is by far our biggest family adventure. And of course, Minneapolis has given our family so many big “firsts” — the launch of Gussy Sews, and just this summer, a little baby arriving in March. It has to be good though, because God is good.
OKIE DOKIE, TIME FOR MORE UPDATES ON CALIFORNIA:
— we are still looking for a house or apartment to rent + would love your continued prayers/warm wishes in this area. If you know of anyone that needs someone to sublet for them, or that has a guest house we could rent, or ANYTHING similar, please let me know. We’re looking in the Santa Monica area // surrounding cities.
— Zack has accepted a 3-month freelance position, which is sooooo exciting! It’s exactly what he wanted {yeow!} + he starts right after Labor Day. Way to find the bacon, babe! ;)
— our garage sale on Saturday was SUPER SUPER successful + we feel very blessed!!!!!
— the Gussy shop WILL remain open while we move. My assistant Cambria will be shipping all product so there won’t be any down time. However, we’d still like to sell as much as we can before we move on August 27th. Thank you for your continued help with sharing the Gussy Sews shop with your friends :) Click over for more information on our summer sale, too!
— we have a full editorial calender for August + September planned, which is making me sooo nerdily excited. Get ready for more business posts + a couple of new blog series!
— October is going to be a BUSY month for Gussy Sews. First I’ll be flying to Indianapolis to be a community leader at Influence, then I’ll be flying to the Philadelphia area to speak at Allume {see full speaker list here}. If you’re going to either event I can’t wait to meet you, yeow! :)
— This little babe in my belly is almost 12.5 weeks old. Every week I find more + more energy, but I can tell my body is already starting to change. Like how I could go to bed at 8:30pm every night ;) Certain clothes aren’t fitting the same way so a couple times I’ve worn a Bella Band that sweet Tracey mailed me. And as for food, all I want to eat is fresh fruit + veggies. No meat, though. And a tiny piece of chocolate after dinner is fun ;) Every time I talk to my mom on the phone she asks how I’m feeling, what new things have we thought about {decorating the nursery, cloth diapering, etc} and it makes me feel so important. I love it, and you Mom!! :)
PS. We sold our red couch in our garage sale — BUT! BUT!, I’m excited to go thrifting for a new couch and I’m secretly wishing it’s red :) Or maybe dark gray!
I LOVE THAT PICTURE! Of you and Zack! So precious!
i’ll email my friend that just moved from Santa Monica to see if she has any houseing contacts.
And…that last picture of that living room….OH MY WORD! Can I sell everything I now own to make that look happen?!?!?!?!! What ‘style’ would you consider this? Cause that’s now my style! HA! Flea Market meets retro?
@Annie, I’m ready to move in to that photo :)
AHH! :) So exciting!! :) Just remember to take it one day at a time!! :) It’ll all work out just how it’s meant to be!
PS – Whoever got that red couch is super lucky! ;) You didn’t sell that CUTE green chair of yours did you?? :)
@Beth, My mother-in-law bought it from us ;) I know, I had like 12 people ask if they could buy it.
How incredibly exciting!! I wish you the best!!! :) Can;t wait to see more of Cali when you get there!
What?!?! I go on vacation and come back to read about a new baby on the way?! Yeow! So excited for you, Maggie!
I’m sorry. I have to use exclamation points when I’m excited! Praying you find that little spot of heaven in California that you can call home soon.
@Southern Gal, Thank you Renee!!! :) And yes, a BABY… http://www.gussysews.com/2012/08/psalm-139-verse-13/
I am really happy for you and Sack that he found work. When we moved here in SA from a big town to the small town of Clarens,( a link so that you can look http://www.clarensinfo.co.za/) we didn’t know a lot of people (just one or two people at a Restaurant where we ate when we build our house). To live in one town and build in another town is a different story, but now after 8 years we don’t want to move. I am sure everything will turn out well for you and that you find a nice house for you, Sack, Bauer ( and your baby).
How exciting! Dave and I are in the middle of a similar adventure! We just moved back to Michigan after living in Louisiana for a few years. When we moved, I was 20 weeks. Now I’m 29 weeks (Yikes!), we finally have a place to live (other than my moms house!) and Dave starts work at his new school next week! We’ve been so blessed through the whole process and the Lord provided for us every step of the way! He’ll provide for you and Zack and baby, too! :) I can’t wait to read more about your moving adventures :)
@Jasey, welcome back to michigan!!!
@Gussy Sews She got it for you originally right?? That was so sweet of her! ;) YAY! It’s still in the family!!! :)
@Beth, Yes!! :)
I am a California girl and currently live nowhere near Santa Monica. BUT I want you to know that in my opinion it is one of THE most amazing places on the California coast. If I had the choice to move ANYWHERE in CA, Santa Monica would be it. Good choice! And so very happy for you. ♥
I love following your adventure! And I love how you’re trusting God with every step. Can’t wait to see how He answers the one about housing–I know it’s going to be just perfect for you!! He is faithful–you won’t be without a roof over your head. xoxo
@Shelly W., Thank you friend for the encouragement :) :)
@Shelly W., PS. can I pre-book you for October? I need an airplane pal ;)
i never want meat when i’m pregnant either!
@Nikki @ Outnumbered, Only if someone else cooks it. Otherwise, icky!
@Gussy Sews, when i was pregnant with son #1, i was going to make enchiladas for dinner. i couldn’t stomach the thought. it made me sick. to this day, i still can’t eat them.
@Katy (lil’ alice), SNORT. Yes. There are a couple of things right now that come to mind: Famous Dave’s restaurant and a specific bodywash scent.
I wish you were moving a bit closer to me! I am in Orange County and would have loved to help you find a place to rent or invited you to church! How’s the morning sickness? I hope it’s all gone now that you’ve entered the 2nd trimester. If you have any questions about cloth diapering, let me know – I’m a total nerd (I mean advocate) about it :) Good luck with the move!! California is looking forward to having you :)
So excited for you! Love reading about your moving preparations (I’m taking notes!) and so glad the garage sale was a huge success for you! xo JA
Glad the sale on Saturday went well! I loved snatching up some Gussy items at your garage sale but too
embarassed to introduce myself :( Congrats to Zack for the new position, so exciting! I’m excited to see what new adventures will come your way in Cali and with the little babe on his or her way!
@Becca @ One Girl, Oh stop it — for real!!!!!????
PS I think it’s a girl :)
i’m so excited for you because you will never have to experience a cold harsh winter again. michigan girl here, is quite jealous too!
cross country moves are so crazy. yours sounds like ours 3 years ago. we move from MN to AZ, I was 8 weeks pregnant by the time we moved too. best of luck to you and prayers for you as you guys get everything together!
Just saw your adventure update! First of all congratulations on your pregnancy! So happy for you. We just moved to LA from Mpls. a couple of weeks ago. My husband grew up in Burbank, so that’s where we have landed. I will be praying for your move and that you find a place to live. We were blessed with some temporary housing.
We met at a Blog pantry event long ago http://kelli-abrahamian.blogspot.com/2010/08/come-to-table.html (scroll down, I’m the one in the picture with you and Mela (http://www.melakamin.com/) (I’m standing next to her with the green shirt)
I wish the best for you!
Kelli (www.ihadadelicioustime)
I am just so happy for you guys. Will continue to pray for housing and for good strong growth of that little Gussy baby! My hubs wants to move to Southern California sometime soon. Perhaps one day we’ll be neighbors ;)
Wish I had gotten to see you this weekend … I was thinking of you. I hope it was wonderful! I emailed my bro-in-law/sis-in-law and they will check on housing stuff and let you know if they have any leads. So glad your sale went well – we will be having one before we move @ end of Sept. Any advice? You are so beautiful, brave, fun, wise and inspiring – wishing you buckets full of blessings. Continue following where He leads you, dear – you can’t go wrong. xoxo
@Mela Kamin, Post the sale to Craigslist — and we hung about 50 signs in the neighborhood and I shared it on my blog/FB. :) Thank you sweet friend for the kind words… I feel very excited and need to remember more often God *will* provide us with the perfect place to call home. XOXOXO
Are there still tickets to the Influence conference? It is pretty much in my back door (that is the hotel where our wedding reception was held…ahhh…memories). If you get a free minute I would love to hear more about it…or if you did a post and I missed it. Best of luck with the move.
@Lucy Jane, I’m not sure, I think so! I haven’t blogged about it but know there’s lots of info on their website :)
This is SO exciting! We are going to be so close. Let me know how the house hunt goes :)
It was so fun meeting you at your garage sale the other day. It was like combining my two favorite things: blogs and yard sales! Sending prayers your way for all of your big life changes! You think you love that babe now, just wait for the blessings you have in store :)
And I love you too sweet daughter!
One good thing about LA . . . the Fabric District! I live in San Diego and try to get up there at least a couple times a year. It’s an adventure.
I don’t know if you read all your comments, but I noticed you mentioned cloth diapering. Please take a few minutes to check out The Little Bee Co. Founded by my close friend and stay at home mom. She started the company a little over a year ago with a passion to help orphans. She went out and designed her own diaper (which is the highest quality) and for every diaper purchased she donates one to an orphan in need. She’s already had several “diaper drops” all around the world (documented through pictures). I have a feeling you’ll love this company! You can check out her business page on Facebook or her website is:

Hi there! My husband and I (and our little one year old son) live in Pasadena, CA. I know it isn’t super close to Santa Monica but we LOVE our church. It’s called Christian Assembly Eagle Rock. You should check out the website caeaglerock.com. It’s such a wonderful community and you are always welcome!!
I highly recommend checking out Cornerstone West LA :) We went there a bit while in college and many friends of mine still go there.
I hope that the move goes well!
Okay had to go from twitter to blog to get up to speed on your exciting new adventure! What a big move. Hope you love So Cal and found a great place to land.
