Here at Gussy Sews we love to look at all things beautiful & handmade. Beautiful items that reflect a happy life, love, and a joyful spirit; beautiful items that we can share with others…
Today is week #37 of my series on Featured Artists, which is a bi-monthly event showcasing fun and sassy handmade shops! I love searching for new wares to show the Gussy community. You can read all back Featured Artist posts by clicking here.
This week’s Featured Artist is Sarah from Egg-A-Go-Go, a shop full of “cute things for you and yours. Shirts, stationery, baby clothes, totes, little paintings, pillows and other things.”
***
Please introduce yourself to us: what’s your name, what is the product you create, where do you live, etc.
Hello! My name is Sarah and I am Egg-A-Go-Go. I live in Jamaica Plain (a great neighborhood of Boston) with my two awesome cats and my one amazing boyfriend. I grew up in New Hampshire and came to Boston to study illustration. After getting my degree I decided to skip the super commercial/competitive world of freelance illustration for a little while and work independently on creating products to feature my illustrations. I’ve been making stationery, pillows, shirts, bags and lots of other things under the Egg-A-Go-Go name since 2004. I sell my wares at craft fairs and other events while Etsy has been my online selling home since 2005.
What inspires you?
Everything! Being alive! My work and subject matter is hugely influenced by nature and the natural world. Animals and plants are the things I love to draw most – so I do. I like funny wordplay and puns. Color is also huge in the Egg-A-Go-Go world.
Share something you absolutely LOVE about your shop/your product.
I’ve gotten some really wonderful, thoughtful feedback from past customers. It means so much to me when people take the time to let me know what they think about my work and how it has impacted their life/home. Also I love making custom orders for people and doing commissioned work. My business plan thus far has been to make what I love and hope that others love it, too. Combining that with the cooperation of working with someone to make a custom piece is hugely satisfying.
Do you have a day job or sell full-time?
I do have a day job. I am lucky enough to work for a great non-profit that runs cancer research trials. I design medical forms and get to say “when I’m not crafting, I’m trying to cure cancer.”
Based on your answer above, what a current challenge you’re facing?
Time management is always tough, most weekdays I’ll get home from work and productivity is pretty low. I love Egg-A-Go-Go and often spend whole weekends catching up on orders and working on new product for the shop. It’s wonderful but there are lots of OTHER projects I would like to work on as well – painting, a children’s book I’ve been ‘working on’ for about 4 years now, collaborating on art with my boyfriend… So many things, so little time! They’ll all get done eventually but essentially having two jobs makes you pick your priorities and that can be difficult.
Give us a little glimpse into what a typical day in your life looks like.
How about a Saturday? Those are my best Egg-A-Go-Go days. I usually spend Friday night packing orders so Saturday morning I get up and take my boyfriend to the post office for shipping duties. The line is always a mile long so afterward we treat ourselves to breakfast/brunch at a fantastic little market across the street. Then back home for silk screening and/or designing. I currently don’t have a studio so I take over the first floor of our condo – kitchen, dining area, everything! Before I know it it’s dinner and time to start wrapping things up! Saturdays are always too short – but lots of fun. (Secret: I love the post office and even don’t mind waiting in line!)
What would you like to learn to do?
Be a better business person! I need to organize my paperwork.
What are you listening to right now?
Oh this response could be VERY long. For a short list here are SOME of the upcoming shows I have tickets to… Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, Mark Kozelek (of Sun Kil Moon), Lia Ices, and Low. (On constant repeat I also have the record Go by Jonsi and all of the Horse Feathers albums.)

My mom would LOVE this pillow. If I don’t win, I might just have to buy one! :) Something good about my day… As I lay here in bed I hear my two year old starting to wake up and talk through the baby monitor. Her first morning giberish is such a sweet sweet sound.
I love that pillow! It is absolutely amazing!
The most positive thing about my day today is that my new website, blog, and shop are now up. And it’s my birthday on Sunday so it is officially “birthday weekend.” Yay!!!
Thanks, Gussy and Sarah!
I’m hoping to make a big dish of mac and cheese to take my sister and her family (including new baby). It will make them happy, which makes me so happy.
I love her shop! Something positive about my day would have to be getting a lot of things accomplished for an upcoming Historical Ball in my area. :)
